Cold Tales
(2023)
Music and the stage have always been linked. From the classical Greek tragedies to today’s operas, musicals and, why not, lip-syncs, the need to stage what the combination of text and music provokes in us is inevitable. However, the Lied genre remains in the musical repertoire almost completely deprived of its scenic possibilities, despite the great expressive potential of its poetry and melodies.
Schubert, the great precursor of this genre, wrote his famous Winterreise in a reality very different from the present one. Nevertheless, the confrontation of the self with the immensity of the world as an existential conflict is still just as relevant in his notes today, despite the passage of time. Almost 200 years later and in a reality invaded by the vertigo of digitality, Bernhard Lang composes his work The Cold Trip, in which he transforms the desolate nature of Schubertian romanticism into a frenetic digital landscape that reflects the dynamism and intensity of contemporary life through the use of the language of electronic music.
The result is a journey from the solitude of a snowy romantic forest to the chaos of today’s virtuality… but always in the search for the answer to the same question ‘Which path should I take?’
